The Right Solution To Dog Ear Cleaning

Ear cleaning is an important part of hygiene to keep your puppy healthy and happy!

Ear cleaning is an important part of hygiene to keep your puppy healthy and happy! Due to the way the dogs’ ears are structured, debris and other harmful materials can get trapped inside and end up bringing some diseases, such as some caused by parasites and that result in secretion and bad smell.

Routine cleaning of dogs’ ears reduces the chances of the ear environment being conducive to the proliferation of bacteria and fungi, but before picking up the swabs, you should learn when to clean your dog’s ears and how to do the cleaning, including knowing what products to use for that.

Can I perform ear cleaning at home?

Although it is easy to clean the ears and there are many products available on the market, it is important to first check with your pet’s veterinarian if it is necessary to do this at home. Some ear cleaning products can be harmful to your dog (including causing poisoning if not used properly).

Using human products, swabs, toothpicks or other instruments is strictly prohibited. Perforations in the region can cause serious damage, in addition to a lot of pain. When in doubt, ask for the help of a professional.

How to choose an ear cleaner

There are many ear cleaning solutions available, so you need to know which one to buy. Solutions with physiological pH, equal to that of the animal’s skin, are well used and safe for its fur, especially for routine cleaning.

When choosing (without the veterinarian’s indication) a dog ear cleaner to use, avoid products with hydrogen peroxide or any other type of acid and alcohol, as these compounds can seriously damage the inner workings of the ears and cause a lot of ache. You can find liquid or gel solutions, the important thing is that it is always used safely, as indicated on the product label or professional guidance.

The best ear cleaner will always be the one recommended by your dog’s veterinarian, so in case of doubt, never fail to consult him before performing any procedure.

Cleaning steps

You should never use cotton swabs on your dog. Swabs, when placed inside the ear canal, can cause damage and excessive accumulation of wax (which will be pushed in). As you will only clean the outside of your dog’s ears, just use cotton balls or pet gauze (to put on the finger), always following the guidelines provided in the package insert for the chosen product.

Wet the cotton or gauze with the cleaning product recommended by the veterinarian.

If the ear is pendulous (drooping), gently pull the tip of your dog’s ear, vertically, to expose the inner part of the ear, if it is erect, simply fold the cartilage gently to be able to access the conduit.

Using damp cotton or gauze wrapped around your finger, gently massage the base and flap of your dog’s ear for about 30 seconds. Some products are dripped directly into the ear.

After massaging, wipe off any residue, including wax or dirt, with clean cotton or a clean piece of gauze.

Watch your fur, in any sign of resistance, do not continue cleaning the ear. If you notice that he wants to shake his head, let him shake! Shaking your head is a natural response and can assist in removing the product that may have been inside.

After your dog has finished shaking its head, check to see if any other residue has left. In that case, be sure to clean it again.

After you finish cleaning your furry’s ear, give him a treat to reward good behavior. Doing this from a puppy facilitates handling throughout the pet’s life.

If during cleaning you notice excess wax, foul smelling, redness or other changes, consult a veterinarian.
