All About Your Poodle

One of the best known breeds in the world, the Poodle has several characteristics that make them loved by everyone.

Its history, however, is somewhat uncertain. Its official origin is in France, but many researchers claim that the breed first emerged in Germany (it is known that the first poodle, the giant poodle, is from there).

A clue is the name, since Poodle comes from pfudel, a German word that means “puddle” extolling one of the main characteristics of the breed since these dogs are excellent swimmers and love to play with water.

The grooming of the breed is also a reason for disagreement. The “lion” cut was made so that the dogs had a better performance in the water, in the hunting of water birds (a practice that they performed in France).

In this grooming, the parts most sensitive to low temperatures (such as the chest, mainly) had a greater amount of hair. On the other hand, some claim that the grooming was used in Germany to help in the practice of grazing, since its resemblance to the coat of a lion served to scare the wolves. In any case, what is certain is that the Poodle is a very old dog.

Countless records portray this dog in paintings or sculptures that have existed for more than 400 years, but it was in 1887 that the breed started to be recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Coat

The Poodle’s coat is very characteristic. His hair is curly and soft, full and thick. The colors are the most varied and can be white, black, brown, gray, apricot and reddish fawn. Usually the color of the pups remains the same when the animal is adult, and can only lighten up a little. They do not shed and maintenance requires brushing only once a week, to avoid the formation of knots (which are very painful and can create a tangle in a few days).

Health

This is a very healthy breed in general, so much so that they live long! However, some diseases can appear throughout the life of these dogs, some of genetic origin and others due to the advanced age they usually reach. Elbow dysplasia and patellar dislocation are common.

These diseases cause discomfort, pain and can even incapacitate the animal to move. Treatment depends on the degree and can range from slight changes in routine and effortless physical activities, to surgical procedures.

Cataracts are another problem that can be genetic or due to old age. Unlike humans, surgery for dogs in this case is not always the best choice. Although there are some procedures that can improve the animal’s vision, cataracts can have consequences forever in your pet’s life.

Von Willebrand’s disease consists of a clotting problem, resulting from the deficiency of a plasma protein. The disease has no cure, but there are treatments to control this problem.

Temperament

A Poodle’s temperament is largely responsible for its popularity. They are cheerful, fun, adventurous and very loyal to their humans. Although the breed has different sizes, everyone’s personality is similar, except for the giant poodle, which is calmer and less barking.

In the case of minors like Dwarf and Toy, they can develop a slightly stronger personality. This is because, due to their size, it is very common for tutors to overprotect their dogs, leaving them all the time on their laps and avoiding socialization.

We must always keep in mind that a dog is a dog regardless of size and they like to run, jump, smell other dogs and put their instincts into practice.

Intelligent

Few people know, but the Giant Poodle occupies the second place in the ranking of the book The Intelligence of Dogs stipulated by Stanley Coren.

This demonstrates that Poodles need very few repetitions to record a command and are always willing and attentive to obey their tutor. Of course, all that intelligence must be trained and shaped from a puppy or else stubbornness gets bigger than obedience.

But in addition to this ease of learning, the Poodle is extremely devoted to his tutor and will do anything to please him.

Life Expectation

The Poodle has an incredibly high life expectancy and can easily reach 18 years.

Poodle dogs are excellent companions and do not require unusual care. They adapt easily in any environment including apartments.

So it is a great breed for those who live in the city. They need moderate exercise, but be sure to take them for a walk outdoors to smell and meet other dogs. Socialization is very important. Feeding must be balanced since weight gain is common in this breed and can harm the animal’s health in several ways.

They don’t like to be alone and can develop anxiety and become destructive if they spend too much time without their tutor. If your Poodle happens to be spending long periods alone, think about having two furry friends so they can keep each other company.
